2026 Young Artist Winners:
Haylee McFadden is an alto saxophonist from Southwest Washington recognized for her accomplishments as both a soloist and ensemble musician. She has earned top honors at Regional Solo & Ensemble competitions in both solo alto saxophone and the large woodwinds category and has performed with All-State Band and WIBC honor ensembles. In recognition of her musicianship and leadership, she was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award in 2023. Haylee serves as principal saxophone in the Lower Columbia College Symphonic Band and first alto saxophonist in the Lower Columbia College Jazz Band. She will graduate from Lower Columbia College in June and will continue her studies in music education at Portland State University.
Zion Van Hook attended R.A. Long High School where he sang in choral groups under Alison Askeland, and had roles in musicals. He is a sophomore at Lower Columbia College, where he studies voice with Gina Challad. When asked what he enjoys the most about being involved in music he said, “I love that music is a universal language. No matter what language someone speaks, music always expresses what it must to those who hear it. A good musician can sing in French or German and people can feel the song so much to the point that they almost understand exactly what the lyrics are saying.” Zion plans to attend Central Washington University in the fall where he will sing under Nicole Lamartine.
